The goal of the prevention program is to empower individuals, families and communities to prevent HIV/AIDS. Women and youths are the main targets because they are the most susceptible members of the society. It is our belief that everyone should be educated to believe in a good quality of life, good health, and know how to protect themselves with all necessary devices according to their culture and beliefs.
The four person staff is dedicated to sharing their knowledge for the prevention of HIV/AIDS throughout the Province of Rayong. Over the past two and a half years the prevention program has been presented in: 62 schools reaching 119 teachers and 4,207 students; 114 factories reaching 2,349 employees; 11 communities reaching 348 local people; and 16 Government & NGOs reaching 606 people
From among the trainees that attend the one-day training course at the Camillian Social Center, the ones that appear to be capable and show a willingness to share their new knowledge are chosen to become peer educators. They are taught methods of setting up a peer support group and of organising local groups to regularly carry out activities on AIDS prevention.
The Prevention staff works with each group of trainees to develop an action plan on the prevention of HIV/AIDS. The action plans are aimed at initiating prevention campaigns and activities among fellow workers or students or community members. Through the peer educators and groups, HIV/AIDS prevention is further extended to immediate friends and family members.
The Prevention program has been instrumental in reducing the number of new cases of people testing HIV positive.
A new prevention department has been implement in the South of Thailand with the support of Caritas Spain. In 2007, Rotary International will be supporting this program.
