Scholarships have been awarded to one hundred and four children in the southeast region to help them continue their education. The children are affected by HIV/AIDS. They are (a) orphans of parents who have died of complications related to AIDS and that are living with a relative in the extended family unit, or (b) children that are residing with a parent or parents that are living with HIV/AIDS. Most of the children live with their widowed mothers or in single parent family units.
At the beginning of each semester, in May and October, the Camillian Social Center gives each student 1,000THB to help cover the cost of school supplies and uniforms. Each student is awarded a scholarship of 500THB per month for a period of nine months. The funds are sent to the students’ guardians and are sufficient to cover the daily expenses for travel, lunch, stationery, books, and other expenses.
Every month, all of the students write a letter in their own handwriting telling about their studies in the previous month and their living situation. Upon receiving the letter, the Camillian Center scholarship co-ordinator sends the monthly stipend by post to the students. Twenty-seven (27) of the students come to the Camillian Center and report on their progress personally. Once a year, a staff member visits the home of each student to follow up and monitor the student’s progress.
